Just saw this on DVD, still buzzing, forgive me if I gush a little ... AMAZING film, imo. Flix big fan of boxing, which is why I chose this. But this is not really about boxing at all, boxing is just a big party and force the metaphor to get back up and keep on keeping on-hand, could have been anything to justify that these characters so intense, so it worked well, but it is only the setting, the story is the relationship, stories, gifts, consequences, layers ... totally smoke million dollar baby, I think in many ways. Great performances, amazing cinematography / art direction, as a great illustration of books, often, esp. at first, gut-wrenchingly moving ... Look!

The patriarch (Jeff Daniels) of an eccentric Brooklyn family claims to once have been a great novelist, but he has settled into a teaching job. When his wife (Laura Linney) discovers a writing talent of her own, jealousy divides the family, leaving two teenage sons to forge new relationships with their parents. Linney's character begins dating her younger son's tennis coach. Meanwhile, Daniels' character has an affair with the student his older son is pursuing.

What about the freaking cat? It is the only character in the whole damn movie I cared. Oh, and Sophie - I hope you ran very fast.

It is strange that so many people and journalists raved about this. It is just emotionally tired and full of clichés about the academic and pompous liberal Park Slope. The director of the unresolved issues are quite painfully displayed. Type. Therapy. Get.

The father is a dimension that is not interesting to watch. However, the mother - who is clearly sympathetic to the parents in the eyes of the director - is horrendous. Because her husband is so terrible that it is permissible to cheat on him for years? And nobody thinks that it is equally responsible for leaving Frank alone for the weekend? He is a child - what if her husband had his heart attack then? And when will she could not wait 30 minutes to show your ex? Furthermore, the savings that he wanted joint custody, because it is cheap "schedule of maximum disclosure crippling emotional? Nice. Overall, a family full of miserable people all deserve each other.

Do not be fooled by the stated duration: half an hour of torture may seem like five.
An almost perfect film. Everybody needs to see this.

Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney are both extraordinary. Factor in the outcome of Jesse Eisenberg and Owen Kline and this may be the most well-acted movie I've seen in a couple of years.

I've never enjoyed watching Daniels. Kline, hit a house in his first managerial role. Eisenberg's performance is Oscar worthy. (Yes, Daniels is great, but Eisenberg won a Best Actor nomination at this one!)

What I liked most of all is how very, very delicate mood is bright woven throughout this film incredibly sad.
